The Ferry Building is a living history of San Francisco's economy and growth. Water, boats, and ferry travel, everything came and went by ship to the Ferry Building. The existing Ferry Building was built in 1898 on the site of the original 1875 wooden Ferry House. With it's beautiful arcades, the Grand Nave spans 660 feet, and the lofty Clock tower reaches 235 feet in height. The tower was inspired by the 12th century Giralda Bell Tower in Seville, Spain, the Ferry building was the hub of transportation in San Francisco with 50 million people passing through each year.
The ferry building served people arriving up the peninsula by train from the east, as well as ferry commuters across the water from the East Bay and Marin. From the Gold Rush until the 1930s, arrival by ferry became the primary way for travelers and commuters to reach "The City", until the bridges were built.
in 1953 Dad called this his San Francisco Landmark series, in 1977 the Ferry Building was designated as a San Francisco landmark. I Guess Dad was ahead of his time.
